Spain plans to ease corona virus lock-down restrictions in roughly half of its provinces beginning tomorrow. This easing will include allowing most outdoor terraces to be opened, allow shops up to 400 square meters (roughly 4300 square feet) in size to reopen, and allow gatherings of up to 10 people at a time to take place. According to official data, 26,487 people (roughly 6 in 10,000 people) have lost their lives from the 223,578 confirmed cases (roughly 5 in 1,000 people) in the country. This amounts to a 1 in 10 chance of dying from the virus if exposed to it within the country. (People’s Daily)

According to a press release by the Indian National Congress (INC), migrant workers have been hit particularly hard by government policy aimed at stemming the spread of the corona virus outbreak. The current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has been noted as having one of the most stringent virus lock down strategies in the world – notice was short, and measures implemented swiftly. “There were millions of migrant workers who were left stranded all across the country, no measures were taken to rescue or protect them,” according to the press release. The INC also condemned the BJP government for issuing a statement saying that it would provide busing for migrant laborers seeking to return home, but then demanding payment for the tickets once the migrants arrived at the bus stations. In Australia, 10 people were arrested and one police officer injured at an anti-lock down protest in Melbourne, Victoria. Corona virus has killed a total of 12 people (roughly 2 in 1,000,000) and infected 1,002 (roughly 2 in 10,000) in Kyrgyzstan. The country plans to reopen some businesses and ease lock down restrictions beginning tomorrow. (Nhan Dan)

The Communist Party of India (CPI) released an article criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s corona virus containment strategy, including refusing to make monthly payments to poor households, not distributing government-stockpiled food stores to the hungry, and writing off loans made to wealthy industrialists close to the Prime Minister. The article criticizes the central government for moving a proposal forward that would allow for the construction of a Central Vista and a new house for the Prime Minister, despite refusing to increase the fiscal stimulus package for Indians. Fiscal stimulus packages are being further increased in both Japan and the USA – by 20% GDP in the former and 10% GDP in the latter.

The article also notes that, despite massive global unemployment and the rising cost of goods, wealthy corporations have still seen their profits increase and that the “ten top US billionaires have reportedly added $208 billion to their wealth.” (CPI)
